Know what is spendable after the merchant processing agreement: each fee line, and the reserve that is a hold, not a fee.
Fee waterfall from this MPA
CalculatorRead this merchant processing agreement. Type the lines. Reserve is a hold. We do not fill 2.9% for you.
Type lines from this merchant processing agreement. Blank is zero. We do not fill a headline rate.
One discount % may already include interchange and assessments. Leave those rows blank.
Type settled GMV from this statement. Other lines can stay blank.
A merchant processing agreement (MPA) is the contract that lets you take cards. The application gets you underwriting. The fee schedule is what you will pay. The reserve clause is cash they can hold. CRM “paid” is none of those.
What the form is asking (to get processing)
Expect identity, ownership, processing history, MCC, product, average ticket, and where volume will live. The underwriting pack checklist names the documents. PayFac, ISO, and direct do not share one form.
PayFac. You board onto a platform that already holds the bank relationship. KYC is for the platform. Pricing is often one blended percent plus a few named lines. The reserve, if any, sits in the platform terms, not a bank exhibit.
ISO. You sign an application plus a fee-schedule exhibit plus bank terms. Discount may be bundled (interchange inside the %) or interchange-plus (markup separate from pass-through). A reserve account clause is common.
Direct. You signed the acquirer. The schedule still has discount, pass-through, and junk. There is no ISO markup layer — unless they added one anyway. Read the exhibit.
This only works if you know which of those three you signed. A PayFac dashboard blended rate is not an ISO interchange-plus schedule. Do not paste one into the other.
What each line actually is
Discount is the percent of gross sales the schedule names. On bundled deals it can already include interchange, assessments, and auth. Interchange and assessments are card-brand pass-throughs. Split them only when the exhibit does.
Auth, AVS, batch, PCI, gateway, 3DS, RDR, chargeback, retrieval, FX, and early termination are named fees when they appear. Auth often bills on declines. AVS is an address check, not a promise the card is good. Batch is the daily settlement header. PCI is the compliance program or a non-compliance charge. Gateway is access to the connector, not Visa. 3DS and RDR on this page are schedule dollars, not the Chargebacks how-tos. Retrieval is an issuer ask; it is not a chargeback yet. FX is conversion markup. Early termination is an exit charge, one-time.
Monthly minimum is a floor on the processor’s own fees when volume is thin. Type 0 if this schedule has none. The calculator treats it as a floor on discount dollars only. That is wrong if your min includes pass-through — read the clause.
Rolling reserve is not a fee. It is a hold from settlement against later chargebacks and fines. It comes back after the risk window, or it does not. Either way it is not spendable this week.
Names come from public ISO and acquirer schedules. We do not invent a “typical” 2.9% + 30¢. Type the lines on this exhibit.

| Line | What it is | Fee or hold |
|---|---|---|
| Discount | Percent of gross sales the schedule names. May already bundle interchange, assessments, and auth. | Fee |
| Interchange | Card-brand pass-through for clearing. Separate only on interchange-plus. | Fee (pass-through) |
| Assessments | Network set fees, also pass-through, not the same as interchange. | Fee (pass-through) |
| Auth | Per authorization. Declines still get billed when the schedule is per attempt. | Fee |
| AVS | Address check. Not a promise the card is good. Often a per-check line. | Fee |
| Batch | Daily settlement / batch header. An account fee, not a card-brand fee. | Fee |
| Monthly minimum | Floor on the processor’s own fees when volume is low. Type 0 if this schedule has none. | Fee (floor) |
| PCI | Compliance program or a non-compliance charge if the form was not filed. | Fee |
| Gateway | Access to the gateway or CRM connector. Not Visa. Not Mastercard. | Fee |
| Rolling reserve | Cash held from settlement against later CBs and fines. Released after the risk window. | Hold — not a fee |
| Early termination | Exit charge if you leave before the term. One-time, not a processing rate. | Fee (one-time) |
| Chargeback | Per-case processor charge when a bank CB posts. Separate from the goods. | Fee |
| Retrieval | Issuer asked for the draft. Not a chargeback yet. Often billed first. | Fee |
| 3DS | Per authenticated transaction or enrollment on this schedule. | Fee |
| RDR | Admin charge for Rapid Dispute Resolution on this schedule, if present. | Fee |
| FX | Conversion markup on cross-border volume. Not the discount percent. | Fee |

| Claim | Reality | Get in writing | Do not |
|---|---|---|---|
| I can always multi-capture any auth | No. Gateway and issuer must allow it. Some force full capture or new auth | Partial / multi-capture enabled on this MID | Assume every auth splits cleanly |
| Partial capture voids the rest for the customer | No. Captured dollars stay. Unused auth release is not a refund | How leftover auth is released here | Tell CS unused auth = customer credit |
| Capture full auth on day one; fix with void later | Usually wrong. Capture what shipped. Full early capture starts the refund clock | When capture is allowed relative to ship | Capture the whole cart before inventory moves |
| Leftover auth waits forever for the second box | No. Auths expire. Second ship may need a new auth | Auth expiry and re-auth rule | Invent a universal hold window |
| Refunds always hit “the order,” not a capture | No. Refunds attach to captures / settlement lines | Which capture a refund reverses here | Guess which line CS credited |

Statements
GuideRead a processor statement; find CB debits and junk
Different statement lines. Filter the line you are reading. Not the sold→settled stage map.
| Statement line | What it means | Spendable? | Do not confuse with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant refund / credit | You reversed the sale on the card | No — sale already undone | A chargeback win |
| Chargeback debit | Bank took the sale (and usually a fee) | No — money left | A refund you chose to issue |
| Chargeback reversal | Representment won; sale amount returned | Yes — after it posts | A merchant refund or a new sale |
| RDR credit | Pre-set rule accepted liability and credited | No — rule already spent the sale | A CB reversal from a fight you won |
| Alert refund you issued | You refunded inside Ethoca/CDRN hours | No — you chose the reverse | A network CB reversal |
| Retrieval / CB fee only | Schedule fee line — not goods money | No — fee is gone | The sale debit or a reversal credit |
| Second credit after reversal | Portal lag or CS stacking on a win | You are gifting twice | A missing first credit — recon before refunding |
