Re-enroll alerts the day the descriptor changes

How to run thisChargebacks4 steps
GuideDescriptor change re-enroll sheet · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

When the descriptor on a MID changes — soft or hard — every prevention seat that keys off that string is stale until you update it. Alerts that still chase the old name miss. Order Insight that returns the old DBA explains nothing.

Pair: Descriptor change re-enroll sheet on Chargebacks. Soft vs hard mechanics: descriptor soft vs hard. Payload fields: Order Insight fields.

Same-day list

Write the exact new string. Remap or re-enroll Ethoca and CDRN on this MID. Check RDR rules that mention descriptor or merchant identity. Update the Order Insight DBA/descriptor the cardholder will see. Run one test auth and confirm clearing matches before you scale traffic.

What not to do

Do not treat soft descriptor as “cosmetic.” Do not update OI and leave alerts alone. Do not wait for unrecognized-charge CBs to prove the hole.

Related: Chargebacks, prevention stack, MIDs.

Procedure

  1. Name the MID and the new descriptor string.
  2. Update Ethoca, CDRN, RDR rules, and Order Insight the same day.
  3. Confirm clearing / statement match on a test auth.
  4. Do not wait for the next CB spike to notice the mismatch.

Failure modes

  • Changing the descriptor and leaving Ethoca / CDRN on the old string.
  • Updating OI a week later.
  • Assuming soft descriptor updates do not need re-enrollment.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

Does a soft descriptor change need re-enrollment?
Yes. Soft and hard both change what the cardholder sees. Remap alerts and OI the same day.
Is updating Order Insight enough?
No. Ethoca, CDRN, and RDR rules that key off the old string are still holes.
Can I wait until the next billing cycle?
No. Same-day. A week of stale DBA is a week of wasted inquiries and missed alerts.
