Hit the alert window or pay the chargeback too
An alert is a pause, not a win. Ethoca and CDRN give you hours to refund or cancel before the issuer files. Miss that window and the bank chargeback can still land. You still owe the alert fee.
Pair: Alert clock — hours left on Chargebacks. Which door owns the case: RDR / alert / bank clock stack.
Two clocks
Alert clock. Hours. The issuer told you a dispute is coming. Refund or cancel inside the window and you usually stop the primary chargeback — get the ratio treatment in writing from this acquirer.
Bank clock. Days. Once the chargeback posts, you are in representment or write-off. That deadline is not the Ethoca or CDRN queue.
Staffing “by end of week” on an hours clock is how you pay twice: alert fee, then chargeback fee, then the sale.
Public window shapes
We do not invent your SLA. Public program shapes:
- CDRN. Verifi publishes 72 hours for the merchant to credit and resolve a CDRN case. Type the hours in your Verifi or reseller contract. We do not fill 72 in the tool.
- Ethoca. Hours, not days. Same-day staffing is the usual public guidance. Type the hours in your Ethoca or reseller contract. We do not fill 24.
- RDR. No human window. Rules already decided. Not an intake queue. See RDR.
- Order Insight. Inquiry, not a refund-or-die clock. A failed inquiry can become CDRN. See inquiry vs alert.
What happens if you miss
The chargeback can still post. The alert fee still bills. Fighting later is a different cash path — price it on alert vs fight, or decide at alert time with rate on alert refund vs fight. Enrollment without a named owner of the queue is a hole on the prevention stack.
Type your written window and hours elapsed. Hours left means act. Missed means you are already on the bank clock.
Related: Ethoca, CDRN, score the next vendor (clock in writing before you buy).
Procedure
- Get the written hours for this Ethoca or CDRN seat.
- Type hours elapsed since the alert hit your queue.
- If hours remain, refund or cancel now.
- If missed, move to the bank clock and still expect the alert fee.
Failure modes
- Staffing Ethoca on a next-day queue without written hours that allow it.
- Treating the bank representment deadline as the alert deadline.
- Assuming a missed alert cancels the alert fee.
Worked example
None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ
- Is the alert clock the same as the bank chargeback clock?
- No. Alerts are hours. The bank chargeback is days. Miss the alert and you still face the bank deadline — plus the alert fee.
- Can I staff Ethoca on a next-day queue?
- Only if your written hours allow it. Ethoca is hours, not a business-day SLA. Type the contract hours; we do not fill 24.
- Does missing a CDRN alert cancel the alert fee?
- No. The fee still bills. The chargeback can still post. You paid for a window you did not use.
