Ask who owns a wallet dispute

How to run thisChargebacks4 steps
GuideWallet vs card CB — claim map · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

Wallets (PayPal balance / Resolution Center, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and siblings) do not share one dispute door. Some claims live in a provider portal. Some still debit your card MID as a normal network chargeback. Guessing which clock owns the case is how you miss the one that actually pulls cash.

Pair: Wallet vs card CB — claim map on Chargebacks. BNPL is separate: BNPL ownership. Checkout wallet fails (not disputes): wallet decline recovery. ACH is another rail: ACH return vs card CB.

What to get in writing

Which wallet path took the sale — PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, other.

Whose MID / settlement takes the debit — provider’s, yours, or a marketplace clawback.

Evidence channel — provider ticket fields vs network reason-code pack.

Refund overlap — whether a provider credit still allows a second debit (refund then CB).

What not to do

Do not paste a Visa 10.4 into every PayPal ticket by habit. Do not ignore a provider portal clock because “we don’t see a chargeback.” Do not assume Apple Pay never hits your MID. Do not invent which wallet “always” owns disputes — type this agreement. Do not mix BNPL Pay-in-4 rules onto a wallet sale.

Related: Chargebacks, BNPL ownership, wallet decline recovery, refund then CB, Payments.

Procedure

  1. Name the wallet path that took the sale.
  2. Get whose MID / settlement takes the debit in writing.
  3. Match evidence channel to that door.
  4. If both provider credit and bank debit post — open refund-then-cb.

Failure modes

  • Pasting Visa packs into every PayPal ticket.
  • Ignoring provider portal clocks.
  • Assuming Apple Pay never hits your MID.
  • Inventing a universal wallet-ownership chip.

FAQ

Is a PayPal dispute a Visa chargeback on my MID?
Often no — many PayPal paths are PayPal Resolution Center claims. Some still land as card disputes. Get this agreement’s rule in writing.
Does Apple Pay dispute on my MID?
Often yes — Apple Pay frequently settles as a card auth on your merchant account. Do not assume a separate Apple portal owns it.
Is this BNPL ownership?
No. [BNPL](/manuals/bnpl-chargeback-ownership) is Affirm / Klarna / Afterpay / Pay in 4. This page is wallet / PayPal / Shop Pay doors.
