Upsell decline after the front-end took money
CheckoutChamp-class funnels capture the front-end, then fire an upsell. That second auth can decline while the first order already shipped in the CRM. Type FE approvals, upsell attempts, upsell approvals, and upsell AOV.
Pair: Upsell decline after front-end on Payment orchestration. Attempt grain: first-try vs net. Soft vs hard next action: decline playbook.
What you type
FE approvals — front-end orders that approved in the window.
Upsell attempts — upsell auths fired after those FE approvals.
Upsell approvals — upsell auths that approved.
Upsell AOV — average dollars on the upsell SKU (not the front-end).
Declined upsells = attempts − approvals. Stranded attach $ = declined × upsell AOV. Fix the upsell path when stranded $ is the problem — do not invent an attach %.
What not to do
Do not invent an attach rate. Do not treat FE approval as upsell approval. Do not dump upsell hard fails into FE dunning. Do not mix FE AOV into the upsell AOV field.

FAQ
- Is this first-try vs net approval?
- Related grain. [First-try vs net](/manuals/first-vs-net-approval) is attempts on one bill. This page is front-end paid then upsell declined.
- Is the upsell a new auth?
- Usually yes. The front-end capture already took money. The upsell is a second message that can still decline.
- Can I invent an attach rate?
- No. Type attempts and approvals. We invent none.
