Ask who signs the personal guarantee

A personal guarantee (PG) makes a named owner liable for merchant-account losses, reserves, and related charges when the entity does not pay. High-risk MIDs often require it. An LLC on the application is not a written “no PG.” The underwriting pack ticks whether PG status is ready. This page is what that status means.

Pair: Personal guarantee — claim map on MIDs.

What to get in writing

Who signs. Name and title. Beneficial owner thresholds vary — get this bank’s rule.

What it covers. Chargebacks, fines, reserves, early termination — as the PG form lists. Do not invent a cap.

Whether “no PG” is available. Some underwriters skip it. Only count that if they wrote it.

Whether a spouse or second owner must sign. Ask. Silence is not no.

What not to do

Do not tell underwriting the LLC “blocks” PG. Do not sign a blank PG and hope the ISO explains later. Do not confuse PG with MATCH removal. Do not treat a sales email as the form.

Related: MIDs, underwriting pack, processor questions.

Procedure

  1. Ask who must sign on this bank’s rule.
  2. Read what the PG form covers.
  3. Get written “no PG” only if they skip it.
  4. Then tick PG status on the underwriting pack.

Failure modes

  • Assuming an LLC erases PG.
  • Treating silence as “no PG.”
  • Signing unread.
  • Confusing PG with MATCH removal.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

Does a personal guarantee apply to a high-risk merchant account?
Often yes. Get who signs in writing. If this underwriter skips PG, get “no PG” on paper — do not assume.
Does forming an LLC mean no personal guarantee?
No. High-risk boarding commonly still requires owner PG. The LLC alone is not the answer.
Is this the same as assembling the underwriting pack?
No. The [pack](/manuals/underwriting-pack) lists document holes. This page is the liability ask — who and what.
