Trade AVS/CVV approval for fraud dollars

How to run thisPayment orchestration4 steps
CalculatorAVS/CVV strictness vs fraud cash · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

AVS and CVV mismatches are a dial, not a brand opinion. Strict rejects bad address or CVV data and usually cuts approval. Loose lets more bills through and often buys fraud chargebacks. The only fair trade is settled dollars from the lift versus fraud dollars from the same window.

Pair: AVS/CVV strictness vs fraud cash on Orchestration. Pre-auth required fields are a different hole: checkout field friction.

How to read the trade

Measure approval % under both rules on this MID. Type weekly attempts and settled AOV. Type extra fraud chargeback dollars from the loose period — fraud codes only. The calculator subtracts. If strict wins, keep the rule. If loose wins on cash, still look at remaining headroom on rate vs threshold before you flip production.

A wash is not permission to loosen. Thresholds do not care that the cash was even.

Continuity and CVV

Keep CVV on continuity MIDs. Recycle paths that strip CVV to force an auth are how you convert a soft mismatch into a fraud pile. A gateway toggle is not a measured reason to drop it.

What this is not

This is not a generic +1 approval point calculator. This is not 3DS placement. Related: first-try vs net, MIDs.

Procedure

  1. Measure approval under both rules on this MID.
  2. Put extra fraud dollars from the loose period.
  3. Run the cash trade. Threshold still overrides a pretty lift.
  4. Keep CVV on continuity MIDs.

Failure modes

  • Loosening AVS on a MID already near threshold.
  • Counting approval lift without fraud $.
  • Dropping CVV because a gateway toggle exists.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

Glossary

Strictness
Rejecting mismatches on AVS/CVV. Looser rules raise approval and often raise fraud CBs.

FAQ

Is a gateway toggle a reason to drop CVV?
No. A toggle is not a measured trade. Keep CVV on continuity MIDs unless you typed the fraud dollars and still won.
Can I loosen AVS when the MID is near threshold?
Usually no. Extra fraud chargebacks hit the same line the lift was supposed to help. Protect the MID first.
What counts as extra fraud dollars?
Fraud-family chargebacks from the loose window on this MID. Not not-received. Not a vendor slide.
