Amazon ads stop at zero — not at thin cover

Amazon’s automatic ad stop is a zero-stock (or unavailable) switch — not a low-cover throttle. If FBA shows two weeks of thin cover, Sponsored Products can still spend until the shelf is empty. You cut the campaign yourself.

Pair: Amazon ads stop-at-zero checklist on Stock.

What Amazon does

When the SKU is out of stock or not buyable, ads that require inventory stop. While units remain — even a few days of cover — the campaigns keep bidding. There is no seller-facing “throttle at 14 days” built into that auto-stop.

What you do

Type on-hand and velocity the same way as cut ads before you stock out. If cover is thinner than the inbound clock, pause or cut Amazon Ads on that ASIN before creative tests. Auto-pause is the backstop at empty, not the plan.

What not to do

Do not assume Seller Central “protects” spend while cover is thin. Do not average ASINs so a dead hero still funds. Do not wait for zero to act.

Related: Stock, ACOS to CAC, landed COGS.

Procedure

  1. Type days of cover for this ASIN.
  2. Write the cut threshold before empty.
  3. Pause or cut Sponsored Products at ASIN level.
  4. Treat auto-pause at zero as the backstop only.

Failure modes

  • Waiting for Amazon to pause while cover is thin.
  • Averaging ASINs so a dead hero still funds.
  • Reopening spend because ACOS looked fine into empty.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

Does Amazon pause Sponsored Products when inventory is low?
No. Auto-stop is at zero (or unavailable). Thin cover still spends until empty.
Is days-of-cover the same job as this page?
Cover math is shared. This page is the Amazon auto-pause myth. The DTC calculator still types on-hand and spend.
Should I wait for Amazon to pause for me?
No. That is how you burn budget into a stockout and a Buy Box recovery slog.
